Literacy

Through programming like free books, literary-themed student trips, and free English classes for Spanish speakers, En Común is striving to strengthen and provide our community with the information and knowledge they want and need. Our programming supports the development of literacy skills for all ages and encourages a love for reading.

Our Literacy Programs

Free English Classes for Hispanohablantes

En Común offers free beginner English classes for Spanish speakers to comfortably start learning the language. Our classes are volunteer-run and collaboratively developed. Please contact us as hola@milmundosencomun.org with questions about signing up, helping out, or sponsoring our students.

Class Trips to Mil Mundos Books

Class trips to Mil Mundos Books are fun, educational experiences that promote a love of reading and community engagement. Each student gets to walk away with a book they’re excited about from Mil Mundos Book’s inclusive multilingual selection. En Común supports marginalized students access to this experience by covering the costs.

Books to Rikers Island

In collaboration with Mil Mundos Books, The Bronx Defenders, and the Brooklyn Public Library, we are supporting an ongoing book drive for incarcerated folks at Rikers Island. Requested titles can be donated in person at Mil Mundos Books or the cost of a book can be donated to us online. Buy books in-person and get 20% off your purchase, courtesy of Mil Mundos Books!

Free Books Project

We keep literature accessible by providing new and used books in English and Spanish for all ages and literacy levels to be distributed amongst the community.
